CROATIA: INTERIOR, ISTRIA, KVARNER GULF

MAP [ ↑ ]
In the capital city of Zagreb, Jarun Lake is the location of the only documented naturist site in the interior of Croatia. It is a small, designated nude beach that is reminiscent of the many interior nude beaches of Germany, but it is quite different from Croatia's many Adriatic naturist locations.

ISTRIA [ ↑ ]
Istria is the wedged-shaped peninsula at the most northwestern part of Croatia. It has roughly 90 kilometers of west-facing coastline, looking across the Adriatic toward Venice, and a similar amount of southeast-facing coastline, looking toward the large islands of the Kvarner Gulf. The places below are listed in geographic order, going north to south (and then northeast just for the last listing), and are grouped by municipality. Istria is the location of the biggest concentration of Croatia's naturist resorts, and all the resorts and all but the last beach listed below are along the west-facing side of Istria. The most popular nude beaches in Istria are those that are connected to naturist resorts. The four sites below that are marked with a blue asterisk (*) are nude beaches that are generally accessed by passing through the grounds of textile resorts. The neighboring municaplities of Vrsar and Rovinj form the epicenter of Istrian naturism, where you will find Croatia's oldest naturist resort (Koversada, established circa 1960), the country's largest naturist resort (Valalta), and the most gay-popular nude beach in Istria (Punta Križ). Those three locations are clustered together. Also in Rovinj, Red Island is actually two small islands connected by a footbridge that comprise a popular day-trip destination, served by hourly taxi boats from the main square in Rovinj. The smaller of the two islands is reserved for naturists. According to signage, swimwear is forbidden, as are cameras.

KVARNER GULF (Primorje-Gorski Kotar) [ ↑ ]
The Kvarner Gulf region is the prominent indentation in Croatia's northern coastline, and it is the location of the mainland city of Rijeka, Croatia's third largest population center. The Kvarner Gulf includes four major islands—Krk, Cres, Lošinj and Rab. Cres and Krk have almost identical land areas, each covering approximately 400 square kilometers, and they are respectively the largest and second largest of Croatia's many islands. Krk is bridged to the mainland. Cres has ferry connections to Krk as well as to the Istrian peninsula on the mainland, then a bridge connects Cres to Lošinj (meaning Lošinj is just one ferry connection from the mainland even though it is pretty far at sea). A short ferry ride also connects Rab to the mainland.

MAP [ ↑ ]
To English speakers, Krk looks as though it is missing a vowel (true of many Croatian words). Make it "Kirk" and you'll get a rough approximation without knowing the finer points of pronunciation. Krk is a popular naturist destination since it has three naturist camping retreats. At the far south end of the island, about 45 kilometers from the bridge that connects Krk to the mainland, there is a collection of multiple beach coves that we've labelled Bunculuka to Vela Luka, and these coves begin next to one of Krk's naturist retreats. The Bunculuka coves are exceptionally beautiful and collectively constitute the most popular nude beach on Krk and one of the nicest in Croatia.

| Rab Island
MAP [ ↑ ]
The island of Rab is often credited as the birthplace of Croatian naturism, although the exact origins of naturism in Rab circa the early 20th century are a bit murky. The beaches of the island remain beloved by naturists, but there are oddly no naturist accommodations on the island. Near Rab town, Kandarola Cove is where King Edward VIII of England and his then-mistress Wallis Simpson are rumored to have swam naked in 1936. Visitors continue to swim nude at Kandarola, which is Rab's most renowned nude beach and one of the most popular in Croatia. It is one of the few independent nude beaches in the country (i.e., not part of a resort) that has amenities like a beach café, a volleyball court and even a small water slide. On the Lopar peninsula at the northeastern extreme of Rab, there are about a dozen beach coves, and three of them—Stolac, Sahara and Ciganka—are designated for naturist use. You can explore all three beautiful beaches in a hike of about four kilometers. Nudity is also commonplace among the coves of the Barbat Channel near the south end of the island, close to the short ferry connection to the mainland.
