ELSEWHERE IN ENGLAND
Of the nine regions of England, the seven that are not along England's long southern coast are included on this page. Most of these locations are naturist retreats of the interior, but there is a small number of nude beaches as well. The best established and most popular of these beaches are located in the East of England, which is shaded in green in the map above. The other beaches are comparatively minor. Population density and climate may partially explain the relative lack of nude beaches in the north of England. For example, Cumbria and Northumberland, both of which border Scotland, are England's two least populated counties, and these two counties have summertime temperatures thats are markedly cooler than those in the more southerly realms. All but two of the beaches listed below are along the North Sea on the eastern side of England. The last two beaches are on the western side of England along the Irish Sea. Wales, which is not shown on the map above, abuts the West Midlands (shaded in orange) and a little of North West England. Parts of England, like the cities of Birmingham and Liverpool, are just as close or closer to the nude beaches of Wales than to the nude beaches within England.

NUDE BEACHES
St. Osyth Beach
51.7700N, 1.0615E

Located where the vast Thames Estuary meets the North Sea, this beach near Clacton-on-Sea is quite popular in spite of the long walk to the nude area. Some visitors pitch tents and camp in the dunes behind the beach. St. Osyth Beach is about 75 miles east-northeast of London.

NUDE BEACHES
Corton Sands
52.5077N, 1.7515E

This beach north of Lowestoft has a small segment that was officially designated for naturist use until November of 2009, when that designation was withdrawn by local authorities for reasons apparently related to an excess of indiscreet behavior. So far, it seems that some naturists continue to visit despite the fact that this is no longer an official nude beach.

NUDE BEACHES
Winterton Dunes
52.7394N, 1.6790E

North of Great Yarmouth, the stretch of beach between the village of Winterton-on-Sea and the hamlet of Horsey is sporadically visited by nudists, with most nude sunbathing occurring in the dunes rather than on the open beach.
Holkham Hall Beach
52.9758N, 0.7849E

This vast beach on the north shore of Norfolk is within the property of the equally vast Holkham Hall Estate, the administrators of which have cooperated with naturists to designate part of the beach for nude use. Holkham Hall Beach is very popular and is generally praised as the best nude beach in the East of England for its ample dunes and beautiful sandy expanses.

NUDE BEACHES
Fraisthorpe Beach
54.0332N, 0.2161W

This beach near Bridlington has a long history of nude use and for a time was officially designated for naturist use, but that designation was revoked in the late '90s, reportedly due to an excess of indiscreet behavior. Over the years "No Nudity" signs have been erected by authorities, torn down by nudists and so on. Nude use of this beach has diminished but not vanished.

NUDE BEACHES
Druridge Beach
55.2748N, 1.5705W

This beach in a rural area north of Newcastle Upon Tyne has traditionally been visited by a small number of nudists, but nudity is frowned upon by local authorities, so some discretion may be in order.
Ross Back Sands
55.6391N, 1.7772W

This expansive and very beautiful beach has a view of two medieval castles in the distance—one to the north, one to the south. Ross Back Sands is less than 20 kilometers south of the border of Scotland. Accessed through a remote hamlet, this beach gets very few visitors. Nudity is known to occur toward one end of the beach, but the entire beach is often deserted.

NUDE BEACHES
Roanhead Beach
54.1714N, 3.2468W

All the previous beach listings on this page are North Sea locations. Roanhead Beach and nearby Walney Island Beach (see the next listing) are along the Irish Sea. Both Roanhead and Walney Island are expansive and sparsely attended beaches that draw a small number of nudists. These two beaches are in Cumbria, a mostly rural county north of Blackpool and south of the Scottish border. The two beaches are on opposite side of the mouth of an estuary, and in places the literal distance between them is just a quarter mile, but the driving distance is about 8 miles.
