GERMANY, SOUTH
The area that we have designated as Southern Germany includes two large states that are the southernmost states in the country. This part of Germany is likely to be most familiar to Western tourists.
BADEN-WÜRTTEMBERG [ ↑ ]
In the far southwest of Germany, the state of Baden-Württemberg borders France and Switzerland, and the border with both those countries is formed mostly by the mighty Rhine. Much of the state is covered by low mountains, and its attractions include the Black Forest, spa towns like Baden Baden and the famous university and castle at Heidelberg.

| Freiburg

The region of Freiburg is at the southwest corner of Germany, bordering Switzerland and France. A prominent geographic feature located mostly within Freiburg is the Black Forest (Schwarzwald), a chain of verdant Appalachian-like mountains. The principal city of the region is Freiburg im Breisgau, usually shortened to just Freiburg. Flückiger See and Dietenbachsee are both small urban lakes in the city of Freiburg, and each has an informal FKK area. While the FKK area of Flückiger See is fairly open to public view, that of Dietenbachsee is a bit more secluded. There is a designated FKK area at Silbersee, a small lake surrounded by textile campgrounds that is located near the northern edge of the city of Freiburg. Several kilometers farther north, a bit beyond the city limits, there is an FKK area along Nimburger Baggersee. Both Silbersee and Nimburger Baggersee are located just off the autobahn. While the four previously mentioned locations are clustered fairly close together, the other two are farther away, an hour or more from the city of Freiburg in the southeastern part of the region of Freiburg. The Riedseen are a cluster of lakes in Donaueschingen, and Strand Gailingen is a pebbly riverbank beach along the Rhine at the Swiss border.

Stuttgart is the largest city in Baden-Württemberg and the sixth largest city in Germany. There are no nude beaches within the urban limits of the city of Stuttgart, but there is Inselbad Untertürkheim, an outdoor swimming complex (i.e., a Freibad) that includes a pool reserved for nude bathers. There are three small lakes with FKK areas that are within 50 kilometers of Stuttgart. While Aileswasensee and Plüderhausen Badesee are easily accessible via major roads, Katzenbachsee is more remote, located amid the rural villages of a large nature reserve in a landscape of gently rolling hills.

BAYERN (Bavaria) [ ↑ ]
Comprising about 20% of Germany's land area, Bavaria is the largest state in the country. Munich, the largest city in Bavaria and the third largest in Germany, is in the far south of the state, less than an hour's drive from Austria. Germany contains a fairly small proportion of the Alps, and the German Alps are entirely within Bavaria, a bit south of Munich in the border region. Bavaria draws more international tourists than another other part of Germany, and the most touristed parts of Bavaria are Munich and points farther south, such as the iconic fairytale-like castle Neuschwanstein and the famous frescoed town of Oberammergau.

| Mittelfranken (Middle Franconia)

The region of Middle Franconia is the location of Nürnberg (Nuremberg in English), the second largest city in Bavaria. The most popular FKK site in this region is Birkensee, a small lake about 15 kilometers east of the city center of Nuremberg where nudity can be practiced anywhere along the shoreline. About half an hour's drive north of the city, Ausee is a small, pastoral, idyllic lake with an FKK section. About an hour's drive south of the city, there is a small FKK beach along a lake called Kleiner Brombachsee that is exceptionally easy to reach by car. You can be naked on the beach less than a minute after parking.

The region of Upper Bavaria is dominated by Munich, which is the third largest city in Germany. Munich is rivaled only by Berlin for the sheer number of urban FKK possibilities. Munich's best known FKK site is a meadow called Schönfeldwiese that is located in the English Garden (Englischer Garten), a huge city park. Schönfeldwiese is very centrally located (just 20 minutes on foot from the city center at Marienplatz) and very popular. However, it is also a bit of a tourist attraction since the sight of nude sunbathers in a very public area is a novelty for most international visitors. Munich's many other FKK locations are mostly off the radar of curious tourists. You can take the U-bahn about six stops north from Schönfeldwiese to access Schwabinger Bucht, a quieter FKK meadow in a more off-the-beaten-path part of the English Garden. Farther north still, beyond the English Garden, there is a hidden, obscure and almost exclusively gay nude sunning area in a greenbelt area called Obere Isarau.
The Isar flows northward through Munich, and there are multiple pockets of informal nude sunbathing locations along the many gravel bars of this shallow river. The most popular Isar FKK site is known as Flaucher, located south of the city center. A less crowded Isar FKK site is a bit farther south at a bridge called Grosshesseloher Brücke, located at the city boundary. Besides the English Garden and the Isar, Munich also has three small lakes with FKK areas in the northern part of the city: Feringasee, Feldmochinger See and Birkensee. Of these three, Feringasee is the most popular, and it is actually located just beyond the city limits of Munich in neighboring Unterföhring. A final FKK option in Munich is Dantebad, located in the vicinity of Olympiapark. Dantebad is an outdoor swimming complex (i.e., a Freibad), and one of its pools and an adjacent lawn are reserved for nude bathers.
Five other sites in Upper Bavaria are in easy day-tripping distance from Munich. In the next district west of the city, Pucher Meer is a quarry lake with beautiful blue water and both textile and FKK beach areas. South of Munich, near the end stop of one of the city's suburban train lines, Pupplinger Au is a scenic site along the Isar that is a very popular weekend FKK getaway for Munich residents and a favored gay site as well, but you'll need to haul a bike or else plan for a long walk. A bit farther south, there are FKK areas at both Fohnsee and Grosser Ostersee, neighboring lakes with mountain panoramas in the foothills of the Alps . Finally, about 100 kilometers south of Munich, Eibsee is a gorgeous Alpine lake with a hidden FKK area, located at the base of the Zugspitze, the highest mountain in Germany (at the Austrian border).
