CORSICA

    Haute-Corse (2B)
    Corse-du-Sud (2A)

About 175 kilometers southeast of Nice, the island of Corsica (Corse in French) is closer to Italy than to mainland France. Corsica lies west of the coast of Tuscany and just north of the larger island of Sardinia (part of Italy). The island's two largest airports are located in Ajaccio and Bastia, and round-trip airfares from cities like Nice and Marseille are available for under $200, making Corsica a reasonable add-on to a trip to mainland France.

Corsica is a mountainous island that is a little over twice the size of Rhode Island, stretching 180 kilometers from its northern to its southern extreme and at most 85 kilometers from east to west. A complete circuit by car along Corsica's rugged coastline is a trip of about 600 kilometers that take about 10 hours.

Corsicans are known for being fiercely independent, and it is often repeated that the natives consider themselves "Corsican first, French second." Corsica has a unique culture that is bit of a French and Italian hybrid, and the traditional language—Corsu—resembles Italian more than French. (It should be noted that French is the dominant language of the island, and very few moderns Corsicans speak Corsu as a first language.) Corsicans are regarded as more conservative than the mainland French, and the issue of nude beaches is somewhat more contentious in Corsica than on the mainland. Except for the beaches that abut naturist resorts, nudity is not officially tolerated at any beach in Corsica. Nonetheless, there are a number of beaches independent of naturist resorts where naturism is practiced without problems. At any of these beaches, we suggest you avoid disrobing in front of textiles in the absence of other nudists.
